This 2001 work is a beautiful combination of entertainment and history, beginning in the 1950s. It's part nostalgia too, capturing the wild, spontaneous, uninhibited days of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack to memorable acts like Luis Prima, Keely Smith, Sonny King, the Treniers, the Checkmates; then moving on to the comedians from Joe E. Lewis, Buddy Hackett, Shecky Greene, Don Rickles, Redd Foxx and Sam Kinison among others. Weatherford's book lets us remember when Elvis Presley actually flopped at first in Las Vegas and later captured the town; when Liberace made it big;Barbra Streisand debuted; the filming of the original Ocean's Eleven with Sinatra and crew; Vegas becoming a place to film adventure scenes (like Diamonds are Forever with Sean Connery as James Bond) and the many movies which followed. The book describes one-shot initial appearances of television personalities who appeared in Vegas showrooms from the 50s on; and don't forget the strippers and showgirls who added a little something extra to the city's mystique. Promotional material from casinos; photos rarely seen before, from the l950s to 1990s all make this a special book for those who want to remember when. 247 pages, paperbound.
