Michaels, online editor of the Daily Racing Form, has compiled a marvelous, valuable resource for horseplayers here. Updated and expanded since the initial release in 2003, the book again provides up-to-date information on all the action, with invaluable new features added. Michaels profiles more than 40 different events from recent years from a variety of major American tracks plus those held in Nevada race books, while listing rules, offering advice, even telling you where to stay or eat and how to contact those running the contest. He profiles the winners and offers their "secrets" or tips for those who haven't a clue that strategies DO exist for those sharp enough to recognize and apply them. Plus, he gives a description of the level of chaos or "atmosphere" you might expect to encounter at the event. There are discussions of luck (shooting for a big priced horse at the right moment); what "acceptable odds" are and the real money vs. mythical money controversy. Added to the 2005 Handbook are more interviews and strategies from expert tournament players, contest tips from past qualifying tournament winners, updated and expanded qualifying-contest index, including increasingly popular online and real-money tournaments. Also included is an expanded history of the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship with interviews, bios and tips from past champs, as well as recommended contest travel itineraries. 258 pages, paperbound, revised, January 2005.
