by Kelly, Bill

Order 551504...$24.95
More than two dozen individuals are profiled(the book is packed with illustrations of these colorful characters) some of which you may never have seen before. Kelly leads off with Wild Bill Hickok an Poker Alice; and includes Luke Short; Soapy Smith; Bob Ford; Doc Holliday; John Wesley Hardin; Tom Horn; Bat Masterson; Buckskin Frank Leslie; Sam Bass and Belle Starr. He captures the flavor of the times; the conditions these pioneers lived and played in; how tough life was (without air conditioning), with hot women and warm beer; bad booze, miserable food and equally horrible working conditions. Kelly has done some fascinating digging. For example, no one knows for sure exactly what Hickok's "dead man's hand" was; and the fifth card may well have been the nine, jack or queen of diamonds. One theory purveyed is that Hickok never received the key card since he was reaching for it when Jack McCall shot him on August 2nd, 1876. 184 pages, 7x10 sized, paperbound. 1995.
