This is the first nonfiction book by Barthelme, author of Bob The Gambler, and his brother and colleague Steven. It is a story of family and a testimony to the risky attraction of casinos—and of blackjack in particular. Within 18 months, the authors had lost both parents. Their father had been a successful architect; their mother held the family together. Not ready for the world before them, the brothers became addicted to gambling and lost nearly $250,000 on the riverboats off the Mississippi coast. In a bizarre twist they were later arrested and accused of cheating, although charges were dismissed. This is a story about two educated individuals who lost control of their lives and their vivid memories of hope, dreams, and a spiraling bankroll, honestly documented. One reviewer summed the book up as "one of the great books on gambling—a memoir of guilt, frustration, the wickedness of American justice, and above all, the hair-raising rush of the action." 198 pages, paperbound, 1999.
